A Design Philosophy Shaped Through Global Collaboration From the beginning, CondeHouse has placed design at the core of its manufacturing philosophy. For over half a century, we have sought new perspectives through active collaboration with designers from Japan and around the world. Our history includes joint development with designers from more than a dozen countries, built on mutual trust and the continuous refinement of skills. These encounters―and the uncompromising pursuit Creating Long-Life Products Since its founding in 1968, CondeHouse has remained dedicated to crafting furniture meant to be cherished for generations. We believe that true long-life products depend on three essential elements: 1. Longevity of Materials Selecting high-quality wood, applying proper drying techniques to minimize distortion, and handling materials with care. 2. Longevity of Structure Creating robust constructions that ensure durability and functional reliability. 3. Longevity of Design Achieving timeless aesthetics paired with enduring usability. Beyond these principles, we continuously enhance maintenance accessibility to further extend product life. We also actively revisit and redesign products to enhance comfort and quality in response to changing times―ensuring they remain relevant and Designed to Be Loved for Generations. Our Commitment to Design and Quality Since 1968 enjoyable for years to come. Rigorous strength testing underpins our commitment to safety and reliability, forming the foundation of longterm use.
of product excellence―have cultivated CondeHouse's distinctive design philosophy. Through challenges such as transforming design competition concepts into commercial products, we have refined both technique and sensibility. Today, our furniture embodies a modern expression of Japanese aesthetics: thoughtful use of materials, minimal and refined forms, and meticulous craftsmanship―meeting the expectations of audiences worldwide. Interview with the Designer In the CondeHouse Youtube channel, we have prepared contents titled Interview with the Designer . 42 Craftsmanship Guided by Deep Material Knowledge and Advanced Technology At CondeHouse, furniture is created through a seamless collaboration between skilled craftsmanship and advanced manufacturing technology―grounded in profound knowledge of wood as a natural material. At the core of this process lies the craftsman's ability to read the material. Each tree possesses unique characteristics in thickness, hardness, grain, and color. For this reason, dedicated specialists are involved from the very first stage of log selection and purchasing, carefully considering how each precious resource can be used to its fullest potential. By understanding and respecting the individual character of the wood, CondeHouse achieves both design intent and efficient material use―an approach that underpins our consistent quality. Since introducing 5-axis CNC machining in 2003, we have continued extensive research and development to fully master advanced processing technologies. This enables us to realize the delicate and complex forms demanded by contemporary design. Yet, no matter how sophisticated machinery becomes, the final quality―defined by a pleasing tactile sensation― can only be achieved by human hands. Relying on sound, touch, and experience, craftsmen carefully adjust each piece according to the wood's unique nature. It is this refined sensibility and accumulated expertise that ultimately define the quality of CondeHouse furniture. Commitment to Repair and Restoration Respecting the time, it takes for trees to grow, and aligning it with how we use wood, is the starting point for a sustainable relationship between nature and industry. In addition to creating furniture designed for easy maintenance, CondeHouse supports long-term use through a comprehensive repair and restoration system, including reupholstery and refinishing services. By restoring the condition of furniture that has been cherished for many years, we hope our customers can continue to enjoy it with even greater attachment. This philosophy drives our ongoing commitment to longterm use. 」 の

The Spirit of IPPONGI Wood with knots, cracks, or burls cannot become furniture. We believe such thinking fails to honor the life of the trees entrusted to us. Just as every person is unique, each tree possesses its own individuality. What were once considered flaws are embraced as character, and carefully refined so that each piece of wood can express its truest beauty. This philosophy lies at the heart of Asahikawa Workshop IPPONGI. Rather than selecting wood to fit furniture, we create furniture that brings out the natural character and form of each tree. IPPONGI
Please note: Each tabletop of IPPONGI KAI varies greatly in size, grain, and expression. As every piece is truly unique, please select from finished works. Some boards exceed one meter in width, bearing powerful expressions in the form of knots and cracks—traces of the years spent enduring nature’s extremes. Through a rare convergence of circumstances, these exceptional materials find their way to Asahikawa Workshop IPPONGI, where they are reborn as KAI, a flagship piece that embodies both the vitality of the wood and refined design. Each table stands as a one-of-a-kind creation, where nature and craftsmanship merge into a singular presence. IPPONGI tabletops are available in four basic types. To honor these rare natural materials, we also make full use of timber sourced from smallerdiameter trees. Guided by the trained eyes of skilled craftsmen, each tabletop is composed by carefully selecting and combining boards into a harmonious and beautiful whole.

We build furniture by the forest, with a keen sense of gratitude for what nature has given us. The beautiful forests of Hokkaido are the starting point of everything CondeHouse is. We use Hokkaido wood for as much of our work as possible, using every last piece of wood to create items that will be part of your daily life for a long time. Treating the forest well is at the heart of everything we do. CondeHouse Story

Utilizing Hokkaido Hardwood and Advancing Sustainable Craftsmanship Reducing Environmental Impact Through the Use of Local Timber Founded in Asahikawa―one of Japan's leading furniture production regions surrounded by abundant forests―CondeHouse has always regarded the wood of Hokkaido as the foundation of its craftsmanship. In alignment with the Kokono Ki no Kagu – Hokkaido Project launched in 2014 and promoted across the Asahikawa furniture industry, we are committed to prioritizing the use of locally sourced Hokkaido timber. Imported wood requires long-distance transportation, consuming large amounts of fossil fuels and generating significant environmental impact. By contrast, actively utilizing locally sourced Hokkaido wood enables a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions associated with transportation. We have steadily incorporated Hokkaido timber into both long-selling products and new collections, and as a result of these sustained efforts, approximately 80% of the wood we currently use is sourced from Hokkaido. This high local sourcing ratio forms a solid foundation for environmentally responsible manufacturing. Unlocking the Potential of Underutilized Tree Species To coexist sustainably with Hokkaido's rich forests over the long term, CondeHouse recognizes the importance of working with a diverse range of hardwood species. In
recent years, factors such as global wood shortages, import restrictions, currency fluctuations, and rising domestic demand have driven up material costs and made it increasingly difficult to secure stable supplies of high-quality local timber. In response, we have expanded our material research beyond conventional species and begun actively utilizing a broader variety of Hokkaido hardwoods. Through strength testing conducted by the Hokkaido Hardwood Utilization Promotion Research Group― a collaboration between industry, academia, and government led by the Asahikawa Furniture Industry Cooperative―we introduced previously underutilized species such as Elm, Cherry, and Japanese Sen into production starting in 2024. Today, we work with six types of Hokkaido hardwood, including Oak, Ash, and Birch, continuously researching and developing methods that bring out the unique character and appeal of each species. By incorporating underutilized woods into our products, we deepen our material knowledge, contribute to broader adoption across the Asahikawa furniture industry, and support the revitalization of sustainable forestry through diversified wood use. Selecting the Right Wood, Close to the Forest Asahikawa serves as a major hub for timber distribution in Hokkaido and hosts one of Japan's most renowned log auctions, where valuable hardwood logs are traded. The region brings together sawmills, woodworking specialists, forestry professionals, and other experts with deep knowledge of wood. CondeHouse maintains close, long-standing relationships with these local professionals, sharing expertise from the log procurement stage through to processing methods. By working alongside those who understand the forest intimately, we carefully assess the characteristics of each individual log and determine how best to use it in furniture making. This accumulation of precise judgment and collaboration underpins the quality of our products. Over 20 Years of Forest Conservation for the Future CondeHouse's craftsmanship is made possible by the healthy land and forests that sustain it. To pass these forests on to future generations, we have continued tree-planting activities for more than 20 years. To date, we have planted over 50,000 Mizunara oak saplings. By maintaining this long-term commitment, we support a sustainable cycle of forests that will continue to nurture both nature and craftsmanship well into the future. 68 Embracing the Character of Wood as Design Embracing the Character of Wood as DesignTrees grow over many years within their natural environment, and each one develops a unique expression. Variations in color between the inner and outer layers of the trunk, remaining knots, and small marks formed during growth ensure that no two grain patterns are ever the same. At CondeHouse, we regard these differences not as flaws, but as the character of the wood. By actively incorporating the natural expressions of solid wood into our designs, we expand the range of usable materials, reduce waste, and give each product its own distinct presence. This acceptance of nature's individuality allows every piece of furniture to tell a story that is truly one of a kind. Making the Most of Finite Wood Resources Thorough Utilization of Even the Smallest Materials Offcuts and smaller pieces generated during the manufacturing process are also valuable resources that deserve careful use. We actively repurpose short or narrow pieces by laminating or joining them to create new materials. These materials are used in components such as chair backs, sofa seat frames, and the internal cores of table legs. In some cases, we intentionally mix different wood expressions as a design feature, incorporating them into chair and bench seats to create rich, varied surfaces. Even wood scraps too small to be processed by machines are not wasted. They are reused as materials for art objects such as COSONCO QS, or as wood chips for smoking, ensuring that each piece of wood is used to its fullest potential.
Creating Long Tabletops Through an Original Vertical Joining Technique High-quality timber of sufficient length for large tabletops is a limited and increasingly scarce resource. To make effective use of shorter yet high-grade materials, CondeHouse has developed an original vertical joining technique that enables the production of long solid-wood tabletops. Skilled craftsmen design unique joint patterns that minimize the visibility of seams, prevent misalignment during pressing, and ensure both structural strength and adaptability to natural expansion and contraction. By carefully balancing material character and visual harmony, these joints are arranged in a seemingly random composition within the tabletop. This approach allows us to use precious resources efficiently while achieving both high quality and refined design―hallmarks of CondeHouse craftsmanship.
Proper use of forest resources Illegal logging has been long said to cause deforestation. CondeHouse uses logs certified by PEFC (the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), and is registered as a wood-related business entity of the Clean Wood Act. We always make full use of wood to the last small piece and produce safe and long-life furniture. Please access the following URL for more information. https://www.rinya.maff.go.jp/j/riyou/goho/ Using Safe and Reliable Materials Commitment to Material Safety As concerns over the health effects of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)―such as those associated with sick house and sick school syndrome―have grown, governments have established strict regulations and standards to protect indoor environments. In accordance with these national guidelines, CondeHouse carefully selects and manages all materials used in our furniture, including plywood, adhesives, and finishes, to ensure safety and peace of mind. VOCs are chemical substances released into indoor air from building materials, finishes, and adhesives. Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has established indoor concentration guidelines for 13 substances, including formaldehyde, toluene, and xylene. ●We use only JIS- and JAS-certified F☆☆☆☆ plywood, the classification with the lowest level of formaldehyde emissions. ●All adhesives meet the JAIA F☆☆☆☆ self-regulatory standards established by the Japan Adhesive Industry Association. ● Our finishes are free from intentionally added VOCs that require special consideration in sick house prevention―such as toluene, xylene, styrene, and ethylbenzene―and are applied using either polyurethane coatings or oil finishes. Certificate of Japan Furniture Industry Development Association (JFA) CondeHouse is certified by Japan Furniture Industry Development Association (JFA) as a manufacturer fulfilling the JFA requirements for quality furniture. Please access the following URL for the requirements set by JFA. https://jfa-kagu.jp/about/labeling/ Certificate number JFA-00018

Wood Grain Color Even though lumber boards are taken from the same wood, the color of the boards may vary for their places of the wood: outside or inside; upper or bottom. Aging changes Wood (especially solid wood) keeps on moving after processed into furniture. Table top boards of solid wood may warp or break. Even so, they can continue to be used by repair. Damages Solid wood furniture may be dented by impact or burned by heat. Even after such damages, it can continue to be used by repair: dents by steam heating; burnt places by whittling and painting. Random match Wood planks or veneer sheets are joined at random, of which expressive surface patterns require craftspeople for high skills and an eye for beauty. Book match Two pieces of wood planks or veneer sheets with similar surface patterns are arranged side by side to look like a book opened, which makes surface patterns look more dynamic by grains running symmetrically. Surrounding environmental effect Exposed to direct sunlight or hot air from heater, wood may suffer from color change or small splinters. Even so, it makes a comeback by repair. Materials
Understanding the Character of Wood Wood is a natural material. Its appearance varies not only by species, but also by climate, soil conditions, and the marks left during the tree's long growth process. Differences in color, grain, and pattern naturally emerge, making every piece of wood unique. At CondeHouse, we do not regard these features as imperfections. Instead, we embrace them as the individual character of each material and incorporate them into our furniture as part of its natural beauty. Live Knot Leaf Knot Branch Knot A live knot forms where a branch was removed while the tree was still growing, such as through pruning. Because the branch was alive when it became enveloped by the trunk, the surrounding fibers remain tightly connected, making this type of knot firmly embedded and unlikely to fall out. Leaf knots are extremely small knots created by dormant or undeveloped buds―similar to winter buds―that became enclosed within the wood. They often appear clustered in localized areas. Branch knots occur where the surrounding fibers are pulled in the direction of a growing branch, creating a distinctive grain pattern that bends into a V or angled shape. Mineral Streaks Tiger Stripe Fiddleback Figure Mineral streaks appear as dark, linear markings caused by mineral components absorbed from the soil. They may run along the growth rings or cut across them at right angles. Similar markings can also result from bark inclusions or bird pecking during the tree's growth. These variations are collectively referred to as kasuri. Found mainly in oak and other beechfamily species, tiger stripe appears on quarter-sawn surfaces as striking, striped patterns. These markings are created by radial tissues that once stored nutrients, extending outward from the center of the tree across the growth rings. Also known as silver grain, this figure is highly valued for its refined and expressive appearance. Chijimi is a type of naturally occurring figured grain, also known as fiddleback figure. The grain appears tightly rippled, resembling fine wrinkles in fabric. By refracting light, it creates a distinctive shimmer and depth, resulting in a richly expressive surface.
Hokkaido Woods Overview Japanese Ash A deciduous broadleaf tree of the olive family, Fraxinus, Hokkaido Ash grows in northern Honshu, Hokkaido, Korea, China, Sakhalin, and Siberia. This ring-porous wood features distinct annual rings. The heartwood is brown, and the sapwood is pale yellow-white. Known for its straight trunk, easy workability, and durability, it has historically been used in construction and bridge materials. It s beautiful, uniform grain makes it ideal for furniture. Since 2015, Hokkaido Ash has been widely adopted for both existing and new products. Despite natural grain variations, its clean color and natural texture remain appealing, even with staining. Japanese Oak Species like Mizunara and Konara in the Fagaceae family are collectively called Hokkaido Oak when sourced from Hokkaido. This ring-porous hardwood has pronounced grain and a graybrown heartwood with distinctive ray flecks. Its strength, durability, and water resistance make it suitable for furniture, whiskey barrels, and flooring. Since the 2014 launch of the Furniture of Local Wood, Hokkaido Project, the shift from imported materials to Hokkaido Oak has been significant. Its unique, natural grain and reduced CO2 emissions due to less transportation further emphasize its value. Japanese Elm This deciduous hardwood grows widely in Japan, Korea, China, Sakhalin, and Siberia, thriving in Hokkaido s environment. It can reach over 30m in height and exceed 1m in diameter. The wood features clear annual rings and a unique, subdued color palette. Starting in 2024, Hokkaido Elm has been used for furniture production, including the WING LUX LD chairs and tables. Its wide, soft grain adds a gentle touch to designs.
Japanese Birch A broad leaf tree of the Birch family, distributed in Japan (Northern Honshu and Hokkaido). The heartwood is light reddish brown, and the sapwood is yellowish white with a clear boundary. There is little difference between earlywood and latewood in grain, and the annual rings are not particularly obvious. It is widely used for gymnasium floors because of its abrasion resistance and stability. The growth of the wood varies greatly depending on the conditions of the growing region. The ones with dark reddish heartwood are called and valued as a rare and precious material. In Hokkaido, monarch birch, with more distinct white sapwood, dominates. The contrast between the heartwood (red) and sapwood (white), which is a distinct characteristic of this material, is utilized as it is, giving it an expression that only natural materials can give. Enjoy the smooth texture upon touch that is the characteristic of the diffused-porous wood. This Rosaceae family hardwood, including Yamazakura and Siuri Sakura, is native to northern Honshu and Hokkaido. Known for its reddish-brown heartwood and pale-yellow sapwood, it offers excellent texture, luster, and workability, making it a favored choice for high-end furniture, musical instruments, and carvings. It has excellent material quality, color tone, and workability, and is used for a wide variety of purposes, including high-quality furniture materials, fixture materials, musical instrument materials, and carving materials. Distinguished from imported Black Cherry, Hokkaido Sakura provides a refined alternative with slender dimensions and an evolving, rich character over time. Japanese Sakura (Cherry Blossom) This is a broadleaf tree from the family Oleaceae, with Hokkaido being the main production area in Japan. The heartwood is light grayish-brown, while the sapwood is pale yellowish-white, with an indistinct boundary between the two, giving the wood a generally bright appearance. It is ring-porous with distinct annual rings, straight grain, rough texture, and a light, soft nature that makes it easy to work with. The surface has a glossy finish, and the wood may display various grain patterns, such as wavy and curly figure. It is widely used for interior building materials, furniture, tools, and musical instruments. Starting in 2024, Hokkaido Sen has been adopted, which features a bright color and beautiful, contrasting grain, particularly highlighted in the tabletop. Although it is a relatively soft material, it is now used for solid wood tables. Japanese Sen (Acanthopanax) At CondeHouse, we actively use materials sourced from the Asahikawa region and other areas throughout Hokkaido, incorporating them into both long-selling products and new collections. Among the six types of Hokkaido-grown wood we utilize, locally sourced materials account for approximately 80% of our total wood usage. By working sincerely with these precious natural resources, we carefully consider the unique characteristics and differences of each material, striving to maximize their inherent qualities in our craftsmanship.
Leather Bits of knowledge about leather Hide is tanned into leather. A close look at the surface of leather shows many scars and wrinkles called natural marks. Leather can be divided into two types by surface treatment: full grain leather (RK, MG, KP, BQ and GR); corrected grain leather (EN and MR). The seven CondeHouse leather collections are appropriately and characteristically painted or embossed for the texture and maintainability. Paint There are two major paints for leather: pigment and aniline. Pigment coats the surface of leather, while aniline penetrates inside. These two paints are mixed for the leather collection of CondeHouse so that texture, concealment of natural marks, and maintainability can keep a balance at a higher level. Texture We have embossed leather as well as natural wrinkle leather to maximize the charm of natural leather grain. Natural Marks ― Proof of Genuine Leather All leather used in the CondeHouse collection is genuine natural leather. On the surface of natural leather, various marks remain from the animal's life―such as healed scars, wrinkles formed through growth, and traces of veins. These features are collectively known as natural marks. In addition, the texture of the leather and the expression of the grain vary naturally depending on the part of the hide and the individuality of each animal. Rather than imperfections, these natural marks and variations are clear evidence that the material is authentic natural leather―qualities that cannot be replicated by synthetic alternatives. Because leather is a limited, animal-derived resource, embracing these characteristics also allows for more responsible and efficient use of the material, minimizing waste. 77 CondeHouse Company
CondeHouse was founded in 1968 by Minoru Nagahara, a furniture craftsman and designer. He began his career as a furniture craftsman at the age of 15 and spent about three and a half years for training at a furniture factory in Germany, a design center in the world at the time. He was shocked to find that European furniture made from Hokkaido oak was being exported all over the world as high-end furniture. After returning to Japan, he established Interior Center (now CondeHouse). Inheriting this spirit, CondeHouse has since its establishment been committed to manufacturing in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, one of the leading furniture production centers in Japan. We believe the aesthetic sense nurtured by the nature of Hokkaido and Japanese culture is embedded in our design and manufacturing. Working with designers in Japan and abroad, CondeHouse has been uncompromising in its product development, and will continue to propose a life and work style with wooden furniture that can be used with love for a long time. About CondeHouse The head office of CondeHouse with our development, administrative and marketing divisions is located in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, next to the factories. We also maintain close ties with other factories for certain types of specialty work. Flexible and consistent production is assured through small-lot production using a system that covers every step from acquiring materials to machining, assembly, and shipping. This system also offers customers the advantage of quick turnaround on custom orders and other special orders.
Global Network CondeHouse established local subsidiaries in San Francisco, U.S.A. in 1984 and in Germany in 2004, and has been expanding the brand across the world. Since its entry into South Korea in 2007, the company has also expanded its business in many countries in Asia. 82 We aim to continue to make furniture in harmony with nature. This is our corporate philosophy made at the time of founding in 1968, based on the idea that wooden furniture manufacturing requires natural resources. In this time and age when the global environmental problem continues to intensify, we reaffirm the significance of the philosophy. 83 Upholstery IPPONGI Restoration lab A large variation of fabrics is offered for chairs and sofas, and the lineup is regularly refreshed, reflecting the international trend of interior design. In addition, leather suitable for different applications is also offered. IPPONGI was launched in 1997. At this oldest factory used since the establishment of CondeHouse, more importance is laid to traditional techniques. Only small number of selected craftsmen are deployed, and they have been making furniture with their long experience in wood working. Fortunately, enough, we have many customers who want to use our products long even after the products are damaged or stained. The Restoration lab responds to such requests. Our experienced craftsmen listen to customers' requests and restore long-used furniture accordingly. Nothing pleases craftsmen more than their products are long used. Milling & Lumber Preparation Tables & Casegoods Manufacturing Chair Manufacturing The water content rates of wood are controlled to be appropriate as material for furniture. The rates are controlled by master craftspeople who know everything about wood. This is the beginning place for our production. This factory is for cabinets, tables, and even detailed custom-made products, where large machines are installed, so that big panels of up to 1.5 m x 3.0 m can be processed. Master craftspeople manipulate state-of-the-art machines in our factories, where substantial synergy is provided. Every single wood is different, and therefore, each wood is processed appropriately to its characteristics.
